Prof. Jin has been working as a professional in maritime education and research for nearly 30 years, and a member of leadership for Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) for over twenty years. After being a Vice President for the University for about 18 years, he became the Chairman of University Council in 2015. He is honored as Member of Transportation and Communication Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education of China.

He has been playing an active role in the international maritime community. Since 2011 he has served as Honorary Chair of the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), an NGO with consultative status at IMO. In 2016 when SMU was selected by IMO as the host institute of Maritime Technology Cooperation Center for Asia (MTCC Asia), Prof. Jin as the Director of MTCC Asia has led the institution towards a center of excellence contributing to a low carbon future for the maritime sector.
